The Meridian is Lewis & Clark College’s student-run International Affairs journal, of which I was editor in 2012.
Previous years’ layouts—and covers—had been somewhat lackluster, and readership was down. The Meridian needed a new layout that would grab readers’ attention and lend legitimacy to selected student writing.
I gave the publication a new look that would entice readers to pick up a copy of a publication that they perhaps had never before noticed.
I chose a thick, gray paper, with the central illustration printed using green foil—a simple design with a bit of a flash to catch the eye. I set the type to allow for easy reading and chose a typeface (Adobe Caslon) that would lend the text the legitimacy it deserved. I placed large versions of the photo submissions throughout to complement the text and provide visual variety.
Thanks to my editorial team for their help copyediting, and to all of the authors and photographers who contributed!
